REGISTRATION OF ORGANISATIONS IN DISABILITY PROGRAMMING
The Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) wishes to inform all organisations implementing or dealing in, disability programmes of the legal requirement to register with the Council. The requirement is as per section 22 of the Persons with Disabilities Act (No.4 of 2024).
The enactment of the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2024, marked a significant milestone in the advancement of rights and protection of persons with disabilities in Malawi. To enjoy, as well as safeguard those rights it is imperative that institutions, associations, organisations and any entities implementing disability programming in Malawi operate within the ambit of the law.
The registration of organisations also serves to ensure targeted service provision and to enable follow-ups regarding effective and appropriate services to persons with disabilities. By fully registering and mapping all organisations, MACODA will ensure that services are evenly distributed to reach the intended beneficiaries, avoid duplication of efforts and promote a robust network for collaboration.
Registered entities will not only gain legal standing but will also have the opportunity to engage meaningfully with various stakeholders, including government agencies, donors, and civil society partners.
MACODA is entrusted with the regulatory power to issue, review, suspend or revoke certifications under Section 5 of the Act, reinforcing its commitment to setting systematic standards and coordinating disability affairs for the overarching benefit of persons with disabilities in Malawi. Thus, all institutions, associations, organisations and similar entities operating within the disability sector will be monitored to ensure that their services towards persons with disabilities comply with the set standards.
