CONDEMNATION OF THREATS AGAINST 10-YEAR-OLD BOY WITH ALBINISM IN LILONGWE
The Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) wishes to express its deep concern and strongest condemnation regarding the disturbing reports of threats made against a 10-year-old boy with albinism in Biwi Township, Lilongwe.
On August 14, 2026, it is reported that a 21-year-old man, currently under Police custody, was overheard by the victim and his peers openly inciting violence by stating that "chopping off the arm" of the young boy would earn him "millions of kwacha." Such statements are not only intimidating remarks; but are also a manifestation of the dangerous myths and dehumanizing ideologies that continue to fuel ritual attacks against persons with albinism in Malawi. These threats constitute a grave violation of the law and an assault on the fundamental right to life and security as stipulated in the Constitution of Malawi.
MACODA wishes to remind the public and law enforcement agencies that such conduct is a direct violation of the Persons with Disabilities Act (No. 4 of 2024). Specifically, Section 24 of the Act explicitly prohibits inhumane and degrading treatment of persons with disabilities. The psychological trauma inflicted upon a 10-year-old child by suggesting his body parts carry monetary value is a clear form of cruel and degrading treatment that the law seeks to punish with the utmost severity.
In response to this incident, MACODA has resolved to take the following actions to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done:
- Monitor the judicial process: MACODA is currently monitoring the judicial process that has ensued with the arrest of the suspect and will continue to do so up to the logical conclusion of the process.
- Technical and rights-based support: In collaboration with the state’s legal team, MACODA will provide technical expertise to ensure the court understands the intersection of disability rights and criminal law, ensuring the law is applied to its fullest extent.
- Victim support: MACODA will continue to provide the victim and his family with the necessary psycho-social support during this traumatic period.
MACODA commends the bravery of the three children who reported the matter and the swift response by the Malawi Police Service in apprehending the suspect. Further, MACODA encourages the public and all persons with disabilities to report any form of violence and abuse against them.
We wish to reiterate that there is zero tolerance for any form of attack, threat or discrimination towards persons with albinism in Malawi. MACODA will remain vigilant and active in promoting and protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of all persons with disabilities in Malawi.
