MACODA Bangwe Factory held a training session on sexual harassment facilitated by Passion Consultancy Firm. During the training, 70 members of staff learned what sexual harassment is, including inappropriate jokes, unwanted touching and disrespectful messages on social media platforms.
Chief Centre Manager for the Factory, Mercy Mpunga, shared her thoughts on the day:
"This training came at the right time when the factory is expanding its productivity. The need for vigilance is high and this session opened our eyes to know when we are right or wrong. Most importantly, it brought us together as management and junior staff shared ideas about what actually happens in workplaces. Even though we do not have these issues here, we believe this is a precautionary measure for possible occurrence."
The workshop had served as a platform for open dialogue amongst staff to discuss real-life scenarios and the importance of confidential reporting. By focusing on prevention and culture change, the training has necessitated safeguarding of employees and ensure the factory complies with Malawian labour standards
