There was excitement at the Game Complex in Lilongwe yesterday as the MACODA Factory Shop officially opened its doors to the public. The ceremony marked a historic milestone for the MACODA, transforming a long-held vision of economic independence into a reality. Guest of Honour Ms. Stella Nkhonya, the AFAC Chairperson for MACODA, presided over the event and described the new retail outlet as a symbol of the boundless potential and abilities of persons with disabilities in Malawi.
The event was attended by government officials and partners who have supported this journey. Among those present were Dr. David Njaidi, the Director for Disability and Elderly Affairs in the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, and Dr. Inge Baumgarten, the Country Director for GIZ Malawi. Also in attendance were Vice Board Chairperson for MACODA, Mr. Vincent Ranjel, Director General, Mr. Ellias Hausi and World Vision Malawi Chief of Party.
During her keynote address, Ms. Nkhonya emphasized that the shop serves as a bridge between the MACODA Factory in Bangwe, Blantyre, and the customers in the capital city. She noted that the products available for sale are a testament to the fact that disability is not inability. Every item found in the shop is produced by skilled men and women at the factory who work across four specialized departments.
Made by persons with disabilities at MACODA Bangwe Factory, visitors to the new shop can find a wide variety of high-quality products, including tailored garments, hand-woven textiles, and vibrant tie and dye fabrics. The shop also stocks professional screen-printed items and a special line of eco-friendly reusable bags
